I need to install [minimal] FreeDOS in a machine already running Linux, without a CD drive. I already have another FAT32 target partition.

FreeDOS is, basically, DOS - text-only OS. You'll end up with a minuscule partition for DOS, with nothing else. As you probably know, DOS does not support USB, you have to explicitely configure CD. Write this to a USB fob drive and boot it to start the install. The âFullâ and âLiteâ versions install the same FreeDOS, but the âLiteâ installer does not contain some extra bonus software packages. FreeDOS is a free DOS application that is compatible with Intel based computers, such as the Vault. The Vault uses FreeDOS to install BIOS updates to the Vault. For creating a bootable USB with Windows, Protectli recommends a tool called Rufus.
I've already runned 'sys-freedos-linux' but it just installs the bootsector and says I have to copy KERNEL.SYS and COMMAND.COM files mannually. Where do I find those files (freedos iso has only KERNEL16.SYS and KERNEL32.SYS files)? Do I place them at root? Is this ALL I need to boot into a basic FreeDOS installation (I just need it in order to initialize an WinNT installation..)

As I understand it, you want to boot FreeDOS using GRUB from your Linux installation.

Perhaps you don't have the newest version of the FreeDOS ISO. The file kernelx.zip on version 1.1 of the ISO contains KERNEL.SYS (and commandx.zip contains COMMAND.COM). Just copy these files to the root of the partition. This should work provided you already have:1) FreeDOS boot loader in the boot record of the target partition (which will load KERNEL.SYS). I guess 'sys-freedos-linux' installed this.2) Some boot loader in the master boot record of the disk (which loades the FreeDOS boot loader). This can be GRUB, the default DOS MBR code or something else. It might require the target partition to be marked as bootable to work.
Since you have to craft your own DOS partition like this I assume you lack the possibility to install from either floppy or CD on the target machine. Another alternative (which might even let you skip the step of booting DOS to begin with) is to make the installation using VirtualBox (to the target disk directly or to an image you can write to the target disk).

3. UNetbootin Adobe acrobat xi pro manual.
UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and many other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It has been around for a very long time, probably one of the very first tools to easily create bootable USB flash drives. Penmai serial stories. UNetbootin is also a standalone and portable tool with separate versions available for Windows, Linux and also Mac OSX.
The program will automatically download and install FreeDOS onto your device, just run it and select FreeDOS from the Distribution drop down menu. Follow that by selecting the USB drive in the Type and Drive drop down menus, and clicking the OK button. UNetbootin will start to download FreeDOS from SourceForge and then install it onto your USB flash drive.

4. YUMI
YUMI is another easy to use and portable tool that is primarily designed for creating multiboot USB devices with several different distros on the same flash drive. Rather weirdly, Universal USB Installer which is basically the same tool without multiboot support, doesnât include FreeDOS in its support list.
To get FreeDOS onto your USB flash drive, start the program and select the USB drive in step 1, then find âFreeDOS (Balder img)â in the list and click on âDownload the imgâ which will open the download link directly in your browser. Then locate the downloaded img file with the Browse button and hit Create. YUMI will offer to add more distros to the USB once complete, just click No to only install FreeDOS.

5. HP Disk Storage Format Tool
Most users familiar with formatting USB flash drives will probably have heard of the HP format tool because itâs a useful tool and was THE program a few years back to format USB sticks. This method is slightly more manual than the 4 above because it requires you to find the DOS files yourself, although we have made things a bit easier by including the MS-DOS and FreeDOS files needed to create a bootable USB.
The program looks and behaves like the Windows format tool and you simply insert your flash drive, run the HPUSBDisk.exe, click on the âCreate a DOS startup diskâ tick box and browse for the chosen MS-DOS/FreeDOS folder which is alongside the executable in the zip file. Then click Start.

After installing FreeDOS or MS-DOS on your USB flash drive and making it bootable, all you need to do is copy all the files such as the BIOS firmware file, BIOS flashing tool and batch file provided by the motherboard manufacturer to the USB flash drive. Boot up the computer with the USB flash drive and then followed by running the batch file.

On UEFI motherboards, to boot into FreeDOS, you need to activate the Compatibility Support Module (CSM), which enabled BIOS features in UEFI. Also, in Secure Boot options, select âOther OSâ.
If you installed Windows while in UEFI mode, donât forget to revert the aforementioned UEFI settings back, before you reboot into Windows, to prevent unpredictable problems.

Windows server 2008 r2 iso free download. Doesnât look like any of these can format the USB drive to pretend to be the A: drive. Thatâs a requirement on some systems like certain thin clients. If you boot from USB with a device that assumes the C: drive, they wonât allow anything to touch their internal storage. Thatâs usually an IDE (2.5â³ connector) or SATA Disk On Module. A DOM is like a SSD but generally made with chips not meant to be written to umpty-thousand times.
